Bijnor : A leopard roaming around Paramawala village in Sherkot was trapped on Saturday in a cage installed by the forest department around 10 days ago. A dog found in the bait compartment survived unharmed.
More than 38 people have been killed in leopard attacks in the district since Jan 2023, while around 120 cages have been installed in vulnerable villages. They said the animal would be released at a suitable location under the direction of senior officers. Officials said Bijnor is prone to leopard movement, with the animals frequently taking shelter in sugarcane fields, leading to human-animal conflict. The dog, separated from the leopard by an iron partition, appeared frightened but had not suffered any injuries. A video of the trapped animals was widely circulated on social media. Forest officials later shifted the cage containing the leopard to the Badigarh forest outpost in Rehar. The cage was installed after the leopard allegedly killed several stray animals and dogs in and around Paramawala. Villagers claimed that two leopards had been spotted in the area. Investigation Launched After Dog Found in Forest Trap
Jay Singh Kushwah, the divisional forest officer in Bijnor, confirmed that a dog was discovered inside a cage trap, a situation that is unusual as the traps are typically baited with goats or chickens. Kushwah stated, “The dog is not usually kept inside the cage. We generally use a goat or chicken as bait.” An investigation is underway to determine who placed the dog in the trap.
