GTA 6 will introduce several new gameplay mechanics. Rockstar Games has already shown glimpses of these systems in its gameplay footage on Netflix, but a recent interview with Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson has revealed more about how they will work. This could change how players approach fights, robberies and police chases in the upcoming game.
In GTA 6, there will be an ability to incapacitate or disarm enemies without killing them, to use suppressive fire, to have a certain number of guns and to do robberies in various ways. A Focus mechanic used in GTA 5 is coming back, but it is remade. GTA 6 will be released on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.
The PC version release date has not been announced yet.
Also, stealing expensive cars will be harder, and a new “Heat” system may appear where police will look for players after the first pursuit ends. But probably one of the most significant things is happening to gun fights. Once the mechanic activates, time slows down, and an enemy’s body parts become visible. Red colours mark the vital areas players must shoot to kill enemies. Yellow marks joints, so players can incapacitate or disarm enemies. As Nelson explains in his interview with Gaming Bible, players can shoot in the vicinity of the non-player character (NPC) to scare him or create some confusion without killing him. It can give players enough time to get away from a particular situation or do something else. Suppressive fire will also be possible, allowing players to prevent enemies from flanking them, returning fire or reaching an objective. The protagonists of the game are Jason and Lucia, and, as per the latest updates, Rockstar seems to be concentrating more on options. Get the latest technology news and updates. Download the TOI App.
GTA 6 will also feature a Max Payne-style bullet camera for the final enemy in an encounter. Robberies in GTA 6 can be carried out alone or with both Jason and Lucia.
Nelson says players can use what is known as a “snap gun” to break into the lock without damaging the door or triggering an alarm. GTA 6 introduces a “Heat” system under which police can continue searching for a suspect based on details such as clothing, appearance and the stolen vehicle. The cops will investigate the designated “Heat Area,” and players must leave it so the heat cools down.
The aiming system is changing too. Lock-on aiming will no longer be the default, with freer aiming and a small amount of stickiness instead. Players can adjust the setting. Police and enemies will also no longer automatically appear on the minimap. Players can choose a loud approach or try to remain undetected. Players can disable the security camera and then proceed to take the money. There will also be information in the map regarding some of the hiding places of the gangs, including how to enter and the quantity of the cash or drugs kept there. Car theft will also require more planning. Cheaper vehicles can be broken into, while luxury cars may require a digital key cloner. Expensive vehicles can also have alarms and tracking systems. “If the car you’re trying to steal is a luxury vehicle, you’ll need the key cloner. There’s also a high probability that it will have an alarm and a sophisticated tracker. Even if you manage to steal it, while you’re driving slowly for a while, the tracker may transmit a signal and allow the police to determine your location,” Nelson explained. Escaping the police will not necessarily end the problem. “If you throw away the weapon you were carrying during the robbery, you can lower the level of suspicion at the cost of losing it. If your clothing and appearance are also known, you can escape the Heat by taking clothes off. If you change clothes in a clothing store and disguise yourself, you no longer match the information from the report and can safely escape,” Nelson explains. Even then, getting into a car marked by the cops will draw police attention.
