Puducherry/New Delhi: Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth & Sports Mukul Wasnik has written a letter to higher education secretary Deepti Gaur Mukerjee expressing serious concern over eviction notices served to residents of Annapurna Farms by the Auroville Foundation.
Wasnik in the letter highlighted that the Auroville Foundation recently directed residents of Annapurna Farms to vacate the premises within a 10-day deadline. He urged Mukerjee to direct the Auroville Foundation to withdraw or keep in abeyance the 10-day eviction notices issued to farmhouse residents. He noted that the eviction move directly disregards the recommendations set out in the panel’s 371st report, which was presented to Parliament in Dec 2025.

He said the Parliamentary Standing Committee evaluated the proposed collaboration between the Auroville Foundation and IIT Madras to establish a sustainability campus. He said while welcoming the initiative, the committee specifically cautioned against constructing the campus at the expense of Annapurna Farms. The committee explicitly recommended that “Annapurna Farms should not be disturbed and that alternative sites nearby should be found to situate the sustainability campus”.
The committee’s report emphasised that food self-reliance is integral to Auroville’s founding vision and Annapurna Farms’ ongoing organic agricultural practices align directly with the core vision of The Mother. He urged him to halt any irreversible action, such as land transfers, demolitions, or evictions at Annapurna Farms, pending formal review. He also urged him to obtain a detailed report from the foundation explaining the legal authority and background under which the notices were issued. He appealed to Mukerjee to ensure identification of an alternative site for the proposed IIT Madras sustainability campus as recommended by the panel. He urged mandating transparency and consultations with all community stakeholders for any future land decisions within Auroville. Download the TOI App.
