Nashik : Thousands of families brought home idols of Lord Ganesha on Sunday, filling the city with colour, devotion and anticipation on the eve of Ganeshotsav.
From crowded idol stalls and flower markets to brightly decorated homes, the city wore a festive look as the 12-day Ganesh festival is set to begin on Monday. Idol-makers reported brisk business as devotees collected idols booked weeks in advance.
“All the major market areas were filled with shoppers buying puja materials, flowers, decorative items, ready-made decorations and other festival-related goods,” said Rahul Daga, senior office-bearer of the Nashik Traders’ Association. It is one of the biggest business periods for traders in the city,” Daga said. After brief afternoon showers, shoppers poured into markets in the evening. Streets around Ashok Stambh, Raviwar Karanja, Saraf Bazaar, Shalimar and MG Road buzzed with activity as devotees rushed to complete last-minute purchases of flowers, decorations, sweets and puja material. Vehicles carrying carefully wrapped idols moved through city roads, while homes buzzed with preparations for modaks and festive feasts. For traders, the festival is also the beginning of one of the busiest business seasons of the year. “Apart from the sale of Ganapati idols, decorations and puja material, Ganesh Chaturthi also boosts bookings of vehicles and properties and drives sales of electronic goods and other consumer products.
More than 700 Ganesh mandals have sought permission to install public idols across the city, promising a vibrant blend of devotion, culture and community celebrations over the next 12 days.
