V Bose, a farmer from Kallupatti union, said the pipeline failure had worsened the situation. We have to travel far to find drinking water as many nearby sources have run dry,” he said. Bose said residents had complained to officials, but water continued to leak from the damaged stretch for several days. A Tamil Nadu water supply and drainage board official said supply through the affected pipeline was stopped after officials were alerted to the leak. “Necessary repairs are being conducted, and will be completed by Monday,” the official said. The official said the board would inspect other main pipelines after completing the repairs to identify structural weak points and prevent similar failures.

The leak has also caused waterlogging near Mathurai village, inconveniencing residents and affecting movement in the area. With the scheme’s supply disrupted, residents in several villages have been forced to depend on private sources or travel to neighbouring areas to fetch water from borewells. The disruption has aggravated an existing shortage in parts of the two unions, where local water sources have weakened. “Overhead tanks and borewells in several villages have run dry from a lack of steady rainfall this year.
