On June 29, 1994, Diana made an appearance at the Serpentine Gallery in London wearing a bold black silk off-the-shoulder dress designed by Christina Stambolian that had been made in Greece. Because one day before her appearance, a televised interview was aired in which her husband, then-Prince Charles, was revealed to be unfaithful throughout their marriage. Fashion has its moments, and then there are times when fashion carries a message. The black ‘Revenge Dress’ worn by Princess Diana is one such example. But why did this look of Diana steal the show? The dress was originally a fashionable one, but the timing of the incident transformed it into one of the most talked-about dresses among royals. Largely, the magic of the appearance lay in its simplicity. There was nothing excessive about embellishments, lengthy trains, or elaborate decorations, as the dress focused on the use of black silk, its complicated silhouette, graceful shoulders, and eye-catching neckline. This simplicity lent a modern look to the dress. At this moment, Diana already possessed a solid sense of style, but the ‘Revenge Dress’ became a noticeable evolution in her style. With stylish off-shoulder detailing, which was a big NO for royals at the time, Diana took matters into her own hands and changed the game. The Revenge Dress did not exist as an isolated phenomenon, but Diana’s sense of style created the signature royal-meets-rebel look. The black dress was accessorised with a dramatic pearl and sapphire choker made from a royal brooch. The mix of pearls and sapphires on her exposed shoulders exuded a heavy contrast between traditional royal jewellery and a modern outfit.
