Congress leader Ashutosh Chattopadhyay called Das’s bail a “victory of truth”. The defence lawyer said the arrest was illegal and argued that protest is a constitutional right. The govt lawyer said the incident harmed the dignity of the state.

He was arrested late Thursday night in connection with a protest outside Bhowanipore Police Station, during which Congress workers allegedly kicked and burnt posters of Bageshwar Dham priest Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, popularly known as Bageshwar Baba. The police had filed charges including disturbing peace, public misconduct, promoting hostility between groups, and spreading hatred. Download the TOI App.
