A 21-year-old youth died in police custody at Chandrakona police station in West Midnapore

Police claimed Rahul Ruidas attempted suicide by hanging himself in a lock-up bathroom

Kharagpur: A 21-year-old youth died in police custody at Chandrakona police station in West Midnapore on Sunday night, prompting his father to demand a court-ordered probe. Rahul was arrested at Surerhat on Sept 10 for allegedly intending to commit robbery. Police claimed Rahul Ruidas attempted suicide by hanging himself in a lock-up bathroom. His family alleged he was murdered and demanded action against responsible personnel. Rahul’s father, Bifal Ruidas, filed a petition before Ghatal subdivisional court seeking a full investigation. District superintendent of police Papia Sultana ordered a probe and initiated a departmental inquiry.

The autopsy, to be videographed under a magistrate-level inquiry, is expected on Tuesday.

Officers broke open the bathroom door after Rahul did not come out for 30 minutes and found him hanging near a shower pipe with his trousers. He was taken to hospital, where he died around 11.30pm.
