Agra teen killed after failed rape bid; accused held in encounter

Agra: A 25-year-old pregnant woman, Anjali , died in UP’s Firozabad district soon after giving birth to a baby boy, allegedly after cops pushed her while picking up her husband, 27-year-old Gaurav Kumar , for questioning in a theft case in which he was not even named in the FIR.

“A police team led by SI Dharampal Singh arrived at our house in Labhua village around 11:45 PM on Sunday to detain me. Despite family members pleading with the police about Anjali’s critical condition and asking that Gaurav be allowed to stay, he was taken to Shikohabad police station. As tensions escalated, SP (Rural) Anuj Chaudhary rushed to the scene to control the situation, and Firozabad SSP Aditya Langeh swiftly ordered the suspension of six police personnel—SIs Dharampal Singh and Satyapal Singh, head constables Mohan Singh and Arvind Kumar, and constables Bhavtosh Kumar and Kuldeep Kumar.

SI Dharampal Singh manhandled my wife and pushed her onto the ground, following which her health deteriorated,” Gaurav told TOI on Monday. Local residents said Gaurav was released from custody only after police were notified about his wife’s death, which subsequently triggered a massive protest on Monday as hundreds arrived in tractor-trolleys, surrounded Shikohabad police station and raised slogans while inconsolably mourning the tragedy.

SSP Langeh said, “Gaurav was brought to Shikohabad police station for questioning. In the said matter, six police personnel have been suspended. An investigation is being conducted by ASP Jaibind Gupta.”
