Kolhapur : The city echoed with cries of “Ganpati Bappa Morya” on Monday as thousands of devotees welcomed Lord Ganesha into their homes and neighbourhoods, ushering in the 12-day festival with devotion, colour and celebration. “May Bappa bless everyone with good health, happiness and peace, and remove all obstacles from their lives,” he said. From lanes of Bapat Camp, Shahupuri and Gangawesh to residential colonies across the city, families thronged markets and workshops from early morning to bring home their beloved Bappa. Dressed in festive attire, devotees arrived in cars, bikes, tempos, tractors and even traditional bullock and horse carts. Many carried idols in their arms, while children proudly escorted Bappa home amid chants and drumbeats. Rajarampuri procession Women, senior citizens and youngsters turned out in large numbers, transforming the city into a vibrant canvas of faith and festivity. At the New Palace, the Kolhapur royal family welcomed Ganesh idol with traditional rituals. MP Shahu Chhatrapati extended his greetings to devotees. Markets wore a festive look through the day as shoppers crowded stalls selling flowers, fruits, decorations, jewellery for idols and puja material. Sweet shops witnessed long queues, with devotees lining up to purchase modaks and other offerings for the first aarti. Giant idols, elaborate decorations and the rhythmic beats of dhol-tasha troupes drew large crowds, while a specially designed green-and-red signal system helped keep the procession moving smoothly. Though the festive spirit dominated the day, police maintained a strong presence across the city to manage crowds and traffic. With most idols having arrived by afternoon, vehicular movement remained largely smooth despite the heavy turnout. As night fell, Kolhapur continued to resonate with devotional songs, drumbeats and chants. Homes glowed with lamps, incense and prayers. For devotees, it marked not just the arrival of a festival, but the return of a much-loved guest whose presence fills the city with faith, joy and hope every year.
