The Union government approved the 45km Phase III in August 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in August 2025, but work on the project is yet to begin. Namma Metro Phase III covers two corridors: Kempapura to JP Nagar on the Outer Ring Road and Hosahalli to Kadabagere on Magadi Road.
At several junctions, the combined road-and-Metro structure could rise to around 35 metres to cross existing flyovers and Metro corridors. The report also found that the Metro-only project has an EIRR of about 17%, while the figure with the double-decker component falls below the 14% benchmark.
RITES said this could make construction and operations more complex. Following suggestions from engineering consultancy RITES, BMRCL is considering reducing the double-decker length from 37km to around 11km. Instead of an end-to-end structure, shorter stretches could be built at major traffic bottlenecks. BMRCL will take the proposal up with the state government. The double-decker proposal is not the only road solution being considered in the area. The Bangalore Development Authority has proposed a six-lane tunnel from Kanteerava Studio to BEL Circle via Goraguntepalya. It has also floated tenders to prepare a detailed project report for the tunnel.
