Referring to Rai’s allegation that contractors were being coerced into paying an unauthorised fee of up to 7% under the guise of KRIDL charges, BJP legislators demanded an inquiry by a sitting judge.
MLC Kishore Kumar Puttur and MLAs Y Bharath Shetty, Harish Poonja and Rajesh Naik alleged that the Congress govt was involved in “60% commission” corruption. They urged the state cabinet, which is scheduled to meet in Mangaluru, to order an inquiry by a sitting judge into the allegations. MLC Ivan D’Souza and minister Khader objected to the allegation, leading to chaos and commotion at the meeting. A remark made by Khader against MLA Bharath Shetty also resulted in a heated exchange. Khader directed deputy commissioner Darshan HV to write to the govt recommending an appropriate investigation into the allegations. He also instructed the deputy commissioner to include in the communication the BJP legislators’ demand for an inquiry by a sitting judge.

(KRIDL), raised by Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai triggered a heated exchange at the Dakshina Kannada KDP meeting chaired by district minister UT Khader on Tuesday.
He said a special session of the state legislature will be held from Sept 21 to 23 to discuss the implications of the Kasturirangan report. The report covers 43 villages in Belthangady, Kadaba, Sullia and Puttur taluks. The minister also directed forest department officials to provide all MLAs and MLCs from Dakshina Kannada with details on the report’s potential impact, including its advantages and disadvantages, before Sept 20. Mangaluru City Corporation commissioner Rahul Ratnam Pandey said the city generated 89 million litres of sewage per day, of which only 49 MLD was treated. Around 44 sq km of the MCC area did not have UGD connections, he said. A proposal involving an estimated Rs 350 crore is likely to be placed before the cabinet for approval to take up UGD works in the city’s central business district in the first phase. The commissioner said Rs 1,250 crore will be required to extend UGD facilities to all uncovered areas of the city.

Political parties oppose Kasturirangan report Legislators cutting across party lines opposed the implementation of the Kasturirangan report, following which the KDP meeting resolved to submit a representation to the state govt. Khader directed the DC and the CEO of the Dakshina Kannada ZP to convene special gram sabhas to create awareness among residents about the objections that need to be submitted to the Union govt.
