Following the discovery, complaints were filed with Gandhinagar Police, health minister and Kottayam MCH superintendent. The superintendent, Dr Tigy Thomas Jacob, constituted a three-member committee headed by hospital deputy superintendent Dr Frederick Paul, with department of surgery head Dr Binny John and department of gynaecology head Dr Girija Kumari as members.
Kottayam: Gandhinagar Police registered a case over the incident in which a needle was found in the body of a one-year-and-two-month-old girl who was administered NICU treatment at Kottayam Medical College Hospital (MCH) last year.
In July 2026, after the child developed worsening abdominal pain, an examination at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital revealed a needle embedded in the body.
The family said the child continued to show signs of pain over the following year.
The case was registered under Section 125(A) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on a complaint filed by the child’s mother, Anju Vineesh, a native of Kozhikode, alleging medical negligence in her daughter’s treatment at the hospital. State commission for protection of child rights and women and child development department are conducting separate inquiries into the incident.
