New Delhi: Delhi High Court Tuesday sought a medical report from Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital on the health condition of a jailed hotel owner accused in the June fire at a Malviya Nagar guest house that claimed 23 lives.
Bajaj, currently in judicial custody, is among the accused in the June 3 fire at Flourish Stay B&B in Hauz Rani. On Sept 3, a trial court rejected his plea for four weeks’ interim bail, holding that he was receiving adequate medical treatment in custody and that the medical emergency cited by him had already been addressed through surgery at RML Hospital. Investigators alleged that the 26-room establishment was being operated in violation of bed-and-breakfast norms.
Because the property had a single entry-exit point and no fire exit, but he continued operations under the B&B framework, police further alleged that Bajaj’s application for a hotel licence had been rejected. Noting that Bajaj had been admitted to RML Hospital since Aug 24, the court directed, “Let a comprehensive report be sought from the RML Hospital,” and listed the matter for hearing Wednesday. Bajaj, manager-cum-accountant Jay Mishra and cook Keshav Negi have been chargesheeted in the case, according to police. Justice Manoj Jain passed the order while hearing a plea by Lovkesh Bajaj seeking interim bail on medical grounds.
