In Navi Mumbai, the Panvel Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with the ICAR-Directorate of Weed Research in Jabalpur, has initiated a biological control campaign targeting Salvinia molesta, commonly known as water flea, at Wadale Lake. This effort comes as a response to the lake’s significant overgrowth of water hyacinth and other aquatic plants, which has largely obscured its surface despite substantial investment in beautification efforts by the civic body. The campaign is guided by recommendations from Mayor Nitin Patil and Commissioner Mangesh Chitale, aiming to provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to the lake’s invasive plant problem.
Deputy Commissioner Dr Vaibhav Vidhate said reducing the aquatic weed would improve water circulation and help restore the ecosystem’s natural balance. The insects feed mainly on Salvinia, reducing the likelihood of adverse effects on other plants and components of the lake’s aquatic ecosystem.
