Varanasi: A 35-year-old man died after being allegedly assaulted by a group of assailants in the Kaithi Shankarpur Matiya area under Ubhaon police station limits in Ballia district on Monday night. Initial investigation indicated that the assailants had allegedly ambushed him over an old enmity.

Ballia SP Omveer Singh and ASP (Northern) Dinesh Kumar Shukla said the victim, Umesh Chaurasia, was returning home on his motorcycle when assailants from a neighbouring village allegedly emerged from the darkness and attacked him over an old dispute. Shukla said three police teams have been formed to arrest the accused. He sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to the Community Health Centre, Ubhaon, where he died during treatment. On the complaint of his nephew, a named FIR was lodged against the prime accused, Vipin and his accomplices. He mentioned that Umesh, along with his two friends, was returning home from the market after buying worship items when the assailants, who had already gathered on the road leading to his village, attacked him.
