Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar : Beed district supply office (DSO) has made it mandatory for Ganesh mandals and organisers of public festivals to use commercial LPG cylinders while preparing mahaprasad and community meals, warning that the use of domestic cylinders could invite legal action. In a recent order, DSO directed local authorities to strictly enforce the rule and submit action-taken reports in cases where violations were detected.

Many public mandals prepare mahaprasad on a large scale using domestic cylinders either out of ignorance or negligence, despite such usage being prohibited, according to the organisation. The foundation said domestic LPG systems were designed for household cooking requirements, whereas commercial cooking installations were equipped to handle higher and sustained loads. The directive follows a complaint by a Nagpur-based consumer rights organisation, which highlighted the alleged illegal use of domestic LPG cylinders by several Ganesh mandals. Acting on the complaint, Beed DSO instructed tehsildars and other concerned departments to ensure compliance in coordination with police authorities and local self-govt bodies. Differences in gas flow, nozzle specifications and equipment capacity became critical safety factors during large-scale food preparation, it noted. The organisation further argued that if an accident occurred and investigations established that a domestic LPG cylinder was being used illegally, insurance claims might not be admissible. It also expressed concern that the misuse of subsidised domestic LPG cylinders results in revenue losses for govt. Meanwhile, officials from the food and civil supplies department in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar could not be reached for comment on whether a similar directive has been issued in the district.
