Kochi: The high court has restrained the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (Bevco) from dismissing temporary sweepers working at its outlets in Ernakulam and Idukki districts till Sept 22. A bench of Justice Viju Abraham issued the interim order on a petition filed by Babu R of Thodupuzha and other temporary employees challenging Bevco’s decision to terminate their services. The petitioners alleged that they had been working for years on low wages and were being dismissed without sufficient reason, while attempts were being made to appoint others in their place. They contended that there was no legitimate or justifiable reason for their termination, particularly as there had been no change in the work or requirement for sweeping and cleaning services at the respective outlets.
During the hearing, the court directed that notice be issued to Bevco and others and restrained the corporation from terminating the petitioners’ services till Sept 22.
