Madurai: Three police personnel, including an inspector, were suspended in connection with the custodial death of Ajith Kumar , the 28-year-old temple watchman who allegedly died due to police torture during interrogation in Sivaganga district. Sivaganga superintendent of police Abishek Gupta ordered suspensions of Thirupuvanam inspector Ramesh Kumar, sub-inspector Sivakumar and head constable Ilaiyaraja. In an additional chargesheet filed recently, CBI named the three of them also as accused apart from then Manamadurai DSP Shanmugasundaram, who was subsequently suspended. Following a court order, all four were remanded last week. The CBI, which took over the investigation, initially registered murder cases against six special force personnel who were subsequently arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Ajith Kumar, watchman at the Madappuram Kaliamman temple, was allegedly assaulted by members of a special police force at a cattle shed behind the temple, leading to his death.
