Man killed in accidental firing while showing off illegal gun to wife

A 29-year-old private-sector employee died early Wednesday in Lucknow’s Sushant Golf City area after reportedly shooting himself in the temple with an illegal pistol. According to police, the incident occurred while he was handling the firearm at his home. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation.

Police said the incident occurred around 12.30 am after Yadav returned home with the weapon and was reportedly showing it to his wife, Jyoti , in their room.

The pistol’s magazine slipped from the firearm and fell to the floor while it was being handled, according to family members and preliminary police inquiry. Police said one round remained chambered despite the magazine falling out. He later succumbed to his injuries during treatment, police said. Police said they are probing how Yadav obtained the illegal weapon and are verifying the sequence of events leading to the firing. Police said his grandmother, parents, uncle and aunt were at home at the time of the incident.

The deceased was identified as Yasharth Sharan Yadav, a resident of Mahipal Kheda in Sarsawan. Family members rushed him to Civil Hospital in Hazratganj, where doctors provided treatment for the gunshot wound. The body was sent for post-mortem examination. Yadav’s father, Shiv Shankar Sharan, works in the electricity department, and his mother is Meera Yadav. He is also survived by an elder sister who is married.

Police said they recovered the illegal pistol and an empty cartridge case from the spot. After receiving information, Sushant Golf City police reached the house and began an investigation. A forensic team and field unit examined the scene and collected evidence.
