A 68-year-old cattle herder was killed in a tiger attack while grazing livestock in the Saoli

Chandrapur : A 68-year-old cattle herder was killed in a tiger attack while grazing livestock in the Saoli forest range on Wednesday afternoon. Wakudkar had taken cattle for grazing in the Upari forest area when a tiger attacked and killed him at around 12.30pm. Meanwhile, Chandrapur district has recorded 30 deaths in wildlife attack incidents so far this year, including 28 in tiger attacks and one each in elephant and leopard attacks. In 2025, 47 people were killed in wildlife attacks, including 42 in tiger attacks, three in leopard attacks and one each in bear and elephant attacks.

Officials said this was the second fatal tiger attack reported in the area this year. The deceased was identified as Vasudev Laxman Wakudkar, a resident of Neel Sani Petgaon in Saoli taluka. The incident has led to anger among villagers, who have demanded immediate measures to prevent further attacks and control the movement of the tiger. Download the TOI App.

The forest department provided immediate financial assistance to the deceased’s family. Around eight camera traps have been installed in the area to monitor tiger movement, while patrolling has been intensified. Villagers have also been alerted and advised to remain cautious while venturing into forest areas.

Forest department officials and staff rushed to the spot after receiving information about the attack. A panchnama was conducted and the body was sent to the sub-district hospital at Mul for postmortem.
