Sydney Sweeney ’s latest sports commercial has sparked a wider debate over the line between celebrating athleticism and using sex appeal to sell a product. After the actress faced criticism for a Novig advertisement featuring her in minimal clothing alongside sports equipment, NFL analyst Craig Carton stepped into the conversation. He questioned why similar imagery involving major female athletes did not trigger the same level of criticism.
Because she’s beautiful, oh, I know why,.
Carton said: “Sydney Sweeney is guilty of s**ualizing women’s sports. Let that sink in for a second,” Carton said. “My biggest issue with Sydney Sweeney trying to draw a parallel between her posing nude and ESPN’s The Body Issue is (that) Sydney Sweeney is selling her body,” Acho said.
“Why would that group of people be upset with Sydney Sweeney? Beautiful women in sports isn’t a problem until Sydney Sweeney appears on a billboard in Times Square or on TV. “ESPN’s The Body Issue was celebrating the athlete’s body. And that’s the gigantic difference there. For Sweeney, her decision to respond with photographs rather than a lengthy statement has kept the conversation focused on that comparison. The debate now extends beyond one commercial, raising questions about how female athletes and celebrities are portrayed when sports, advertising and physical appearance overlap.
Acho said: The debate took another turn when former NFL player and analyst Emmanuel Acho responded to Sweeney’s comparison.
