EM Sudarsana Nachiappan, former Union minister, dies at 79

He was 79. SIVAGANGA: Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister EM Sudarsana Nachiappan passed away at his residence in Sivaganga district on Thursday following a brief illness.

A veteran Congressman, Nachiappan began his political journey in 1969 and rose through the ranks of the party over several decades. He served as the Lok Sabha member from Sivaganga between 1999 and 2004 after defeating senior leader P Chidambaram in the parliamentary election. He later represented Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha from 2004 to 2016. He served as Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry in the UPA government led by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from 2013 to 2014.

Nachiappan held several key positions in Parliament and chaired important committees during his tenure. Born in Eriyur in Sivaganga district, Nachiappan was a lawyer by profession and had practised in the Supreme Court. Political leaders across party lines expressed grief over his demise. Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram expressed his condolences over X post. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram also paid his last respects. MP Kanimozhi, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan also expressed their grief and offered condolences to the family of the bereaved over the X post. Download the TOI App.
