New Delhi: Gold and diamond jewellery worth around Rs 3 crore and Rs 4.3 lakh in cash went missing from a house in Timarpur’s Riviera Apartments, Mall Road, triggering a police chase across railway stations, highways and villages in Bihar and Jharkhand before the stolen items were found buried nearly five feet underground.
Technical surveillance identified the suspects as Kamat of Kadmaha village in Supaul, Bihar, and a 17-year-old youth from Giridih, Jharkhand. On Sept 8, the teenager contacted relatives in Jharkhand from Darbhanga Railway Station. The teenager was apprehended in Giridih on Sept 10. His father-in-law, Dev Chandra Sah, 49, was arrested after cops recovered the bag with the cash and jewellery. The recovery included 117 gold and diamond jewellery items and was videographed through e-Sakshya. Kamat was arrested on Sept 16 on transit remand. Kamat had earlier been booked in connection with a Rs 1.25-crore burglary in Shalimar Bagh.
Police said he allegedly planned to flee to Nepal and open a restaurant or café. The North District crime team inspected the house and a case was registered at Timarpur police station under BNS sections. Cops scanned CCTV footage and saw the suspects leaving with two backpacks. CDRs and other inputs led police to Darbhanga. CCTV footage showed Anil carrying a bag while the teenager was empty-handed before they left separately. Police tracked Kamat to his in-laws’ house in Sukha Nagar, Supaul, but he was not there.
The burglary was discovered on Sept 6 by Anshul Gupta (44) when he went to check his brother Anuj Gupta’s house and found the locks of the house and almirahs broken and household articles scattered. Anuj and his family had gone abroad on Sept 2, Anshul said. Gold and diamond jewellery and cash were found missing. Two domestic workers, hired the previous month, were also untraceable and their phones were switched off.
