A gang from Dindigul used a concealed LED light to make an ordinary bead glow in the dark and sold it as a mythical “Nagarathina kal” that emitted light and fetched huge sums.
On Jan 10, Santhanakrishnan, his son Hariharan and Hariharan’s friend Sivakumar went to a field at Mamarathupatti to collect it.
During trial, Santhanakrishnan said Karunchamy conducted a ‘test’ and light immediately appeared from the purported stone. Police said the glow had been created using an LED arrangement concealed during the demonstration. The court convicted Karunchamy of murder and rioting with a deadly weapon. The other five were convicted of murder with common object, wrongful confinement and rioting. The six — Karunchamy, Chinnaiya, Karanthan, Chinnakunju, Vellaisamy and Palraj — were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The con later became the centrepiece of a murder case in which six men were sentenced to life imprisonment by a Dindigul sessions court.
