Madurai: The Centre on Thursday informed Madras high court that full-fledged outpatient department (OPD) services would commence at the OPD block of AIIMS Madurai from January 1, 2027, and necessary arrangements are being made for the same. In the report, the Centre submitted that 59% of the AIIMS Madurai project would be completed during September. It further said that shifting of all the five batches (2021 to 2025) of MBBS students from the temporary campus at Ramanathapuram Government Medical College to AIIMS Madurai campus was completed on August 31 in a phased manner. The first bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice C V Karthikeyan took note of the submission and closed a public interest litigation filed in 2021 by K Pushpavanam of Madurai. The petitioner stated that the central government had announced AIIMS at Thoppur in 2018. Subsequently, the central government had also issued a gazette notification for establishing AIIMS Madurai in 2020.

All the students are residing at hostels in AIIMS Madurai campus and are attending academic and clinical activities at the government medical college in Madurai. He stated that cabinet approval for establishing AIIMS at Bibinagar in Telangana was also given on the same day. However, as per data available on the ministry’s website, AIIMS at Bibinagar is currently providing OPD services and MBBS classes are also being conducted. Hence, the petitioner moved court seeking a direction to the authorities to establish a temporary campus for AIIMS Madurai to provide OPD services and also sought to commence conducting MBBS courses in the temporary campus similar to the other AIIMS in the country as per the guidelines for implementation of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana scheme.
