Terry Bradshaw reveals why Nick Saban had enough at Alabama as NIL turned college football into a new game
Saban’s retirement came nine days after Alabama lost to Michigan in the Rose Bowl. ESPN reported that he told his players the changes in college football had helped him decide that the time was right to retire.
Saban retired on January 10, 2024, after 17 seasons at Alabama. Because of NIL money and the transfer portal, bradshaw said Saban did not want to keep recruiting his own players. “Look, you don’t want to have to continue to recruit your players that you’ve already signed year after year after year. When he announced his decision, he said he believed it was time to walk away.
“I think Nick Saban left Alabama because he didn’t want to do that,” Bradshaw said. Terry Bradshaw has offered his view on why Nick Saban walked away from Alabama, saying the former coach did not want to spend his final years dealing with the new demands of college football. Still, Saban’s own comments show that retirement was not presented as being caused by one issue alone. He also pointed to changes around NIL, transfers, tampering and the recruiting calendar.
