MUMBAI: Western Railway has revised the stopping pattern of suburban trains at Charni Road on September 25, Anant Chaturdashi , following a request from the Government Railway Police (GRP) to manage the expected rush during Ganesh idol immersions. Under the revised arrangement, 37 up through-line trains, which normally run fast between Mumbai Central and Churchgate, will halt at all stations between the two termini from 5pm to 8.30pm. At the same time, 84 up local-line trains will not halt at Platform 2 at Charni Road between 6pm and 11.30pm.
Charni Road is the closest railway station to Girgaum Chowpatty, one of the city’s major immersion spots. The station is also located close to Girgaum, where several Ganesh mandals have their pandals, attracting large numbers of devotees for pandal hopping during the festival. The additional halts are intended to facilitate the movement of passengers during the peak immersion period. The exclusion of these halts is aimed at segregating and staggering the crowd at Charni Road, preventing a large number of passengers from converging at the station simultaneously.
The temporary changes have been approved by the competent authority and will be in force on September 25 to facilitate passenger movement and manage crowds during Anant Chaturdashi. Because of platform-related constraints, the railway has also decided that three 15-car services will not be halted at Grant Road, Charni Road and Marine Lines on the through line.
