Varanasi: A newborn girl, believed to be one or two days old, was found abandoned in a bag near a house in Suddhipur Kathwatiya village under Shivpur police station limits on Friday morning.

Around 5am, local resident Reeta heard faint cries coming from the bushes while cleaning her house but initially thought an animal might have given birth. Later, after finishing her household chores, she went towards the field with her mother and heard the cries again, this time louder. On checking the area, the two found a sweets bag lying nearby. They opened it and were shocked to find a newborn inside. Reeta’s mother immediately alerted villagers, following which a crowd gathered at the spot and residents informed the police.
