In a parallel move, Howrah Municipal Corporation on Saturday decided to develop a 13-storeyed mixed-use complex with a bus terminus, car parking, retail spaces, offices, food court and multiplex at an estimated cost of Rs 250-Rs 300 crore under a public-private partnership, with the state holding a 70% stake. The survey and renovation work will begin after the festive season, with the government targeting completion before Durga Puja in 2027. The subway network around Howrah station handles a daily passenger load of around 60 lakh and serves as a key connector between railway platforms, East-West Metro, bus services and ferry operations. Howrah main subway is around 350 metres long, while the ferry ghat subway extends around 50 metres, according to the DPR. Electro-mechanical upgrades will include new internal wiring and LED lighting, fire detection and alarm systems, CCTV coverage, renovation of the air circulation system, air-conditioning in control and monitoring rooms, escalators at Subway Gates 6 and 9, two escalators in the ferry ghat subway, transformer strengthening, dewatering pumps and a public address system. The DPR for the proposed 13-storeyed complex is yet to be prepared.
Minister of state for urban development and municipal affairs Umesh Rai said the subway revamp had been launched after approval from the state cabinet. Officials said the area had not received adequate infrastructure upgrades despite a steady rise in commuter volume. A coordination meeting was held to discuss the redevelopment of the Howrah station area and finalise the implementation plan. The meeting was attended by the KMDA CEO, Howrah district magistrate, Howrah Police commissioner, Howrah Municipal Corporation commissioner, Railways’ senior divisional commercial manager and senior officials from KMDA, HMC, the district administration, Railways and other departments. Planned civil works include PVC-panelled ceilings, granite tile wall finishing, granite slab flooring, digital display boards, directional signage, steel-and-glass canopies at entry and exit points. As planned, the ground floor will house the bus terminus, an air-conditioned passenger lounge with seating and television facilities, retail stalls, book and periodical stalls, snack counters, and low-cost toilets and bathing facilities available to travellers and the public for a fixed fee. The next two floors will accommodate taxi and app-based cab stands, while two more floors will be used for two-wheeler and four-wheeler parking. The upper floors will include a shopping mall, food court, theatre and auditorium. The top two floors will have affordable AC accommodation, waiting areas, snack bars and food stalls for railway and long-distance bus passengers. Rooms may be booked for leisure stays of up to two days, while balconies on the 12th and 13th floors will offer views of the Hoghly. A KMDA-built skywalk will directly connect Howrah station with the accommodation and waiting-area floors.
