Kolkata: A 49-year-old assistant sub-assistant Inspector-rank commando was found hanging inside a bathroom at the Police Training School (PTS) in Kolkata on Saturday morning, police said.

He was found hanging inside a third-floor bathroom of the Commando Barrack at PTS under Alipore police station around 9.50am.

The bathroom door was locked from inside, according to police. He was subsequently taken to SSKM Hospital, where doctors declared him “brought dead“. He was posted as a DI and was regarded as a well-regarded member of the force, according to police sources.

The deceased was identified as Deepak Tamang, a resident of Kalimpong. Tamang’s colleagues broke open the door and found him hanging from a pipeline with a gamchha. The ligature was cut and Tamang was brought down. Tamang, a resident of Seven Mile in Kalimpong district, had been serving in the Kolkata Police as a commando for several years. His family has been informed. No formal FIR has been registered so far, but police have initiated an investigation to determine what prompted Tamang to take the extreme step. Investigators are also examining the circumstances preceding his death and speaking to his colleagues to ascertain whether he had been facing any personal or professional difficulties. The incident has left the PTS campus subdued.
