The arrested men are involved in granite works, according to the police. The police said their modus operandi involved stealing granite slabs from the cemeteries and selling them for funeral rites at the next church. The graves are covered with relatively thin granite slabs, which they said required specialised handling to remove without causing damage.
The arrested are Jalal Sundar, a native of Tamil Nadu, Surjit, of West Bengal, and Sajith , a native of Padimon in Mallappally. Among them, Sundar is the shop owner. Pathanamthitta : Police on Sunday caught three men who stole a granite slab installed over a grave at St Thomas Mar Thoma Church cemetery at Anicadu near Mallappally in Pathanamthitta. The six-foot-long granite slab was found missing from the tomb of one Annamma Kurien on Sunday morning.
