Rockstar Games is poised to introduce a multiplayer mode for Grand: The wider industry impact

Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI is already shaping up to be the biggest video game debut in history when it launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, speaking at the Tokyo Game Show, said the frenzy around GTA 6 will dominate the holiday season, leaving little room for competitors, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Rockstar Plans Multiplayer Launch for GTA 6 in 2024

Rockstar Games is set to introduce a multiplayer mode for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) next year, according to industry analyst Clancy. This addition is expected to generate significant excitement, especially following the initial release of the game. Clancy stated, “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”

The multiplayer mode will facilitate both cooperative and competitive play online, potentially extending the game’s appeal long after its single-player campaign concludes.

For Twitch, the upcoming multiplayer launch could significantly boost viewer engagement. Clancy noted that the platform anticipates a resurgence in viewership, attracting back users who have drifted away. Historically, GTA V’s role-playing servers have been among the most popular content on Twitch, with streamers taking on diverse roles such as police officers, criminals, and judges, creating dynamic narratives within the game.

Clancy characterized this role-playing format as a form of improvisational performance art, which has successfully engaged audiences, including those who do not actively play the game. This sustained viewer engagement is increasingly valuable for publishers aiming to maintain interest in a title over time.
