Madurai: Madras high court on Monday sought a response from the state govt on a plea seeking a direction to the authorities for appointment of competent people to translate 18th and 19th century administrative documents in Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji’s Saraswathi Mahal Library from ‘Modi’ script to Tamil language.
Though a considerable number of documents in Modi script were translated earlier, more than 1,200 bundles of Modi documents are required to be translated. He stated that he came to know that the Modi language lost its significance even in Maharashtra and only a few people are trained in both reading and writing the script. A division bench of Justice C V Karthikeyan and Justice R Sakthivel was hearing a public interest litigation filed by V Jeevakumar of Thanjavur district. If their services are not utilised in time, it will be impossible to translate those documents. Hence, the petitioner moved court.
