The property, known as Falcon Lair, was purchased for $15 million in 2021 by a Beverly Hills business couple, after the historic mansion that once stood there had already been demolished, according to the New York Post. The owners later drew up plans for a new 17,000-square-foot residence, adding another chapter to the property’s Hollywood history. Falcon Lair’s best-known chapter began in 1925, when Italian-born actor Rudolph Valentino bought the Beverly Hills property for $175,000, according to Forbes. The main house was an 11-bedroom Mediterranean-style villa. He passed away in August 1926 at the age of 31, barely less than two years after purchasing the land. In 2020, the couple who would eventually acquire the larger estate purchased a 1.25-acre portion for $3.75 million, according to Architectural Digest. A year later, they bought the four-acre property for $15 million, bringing together the land on which a new estate could be developed.

A four-acre Beverly Hills estate with ties to silent-film star Rudolph Valentino is set for another transformation. Valentino was one of the biggest stars of the silent-film era, known for films including The Sheikh and Blood and Sand. He named the estate Falcon Lair after The Hooded Falcon , a film project he had planned but never completed. The property became a private retreat that reflected Valentino’s interest in European-style architecture and furnishings. It was designed by architect Wallace Neff. The star furnished the house with antique furniture. There were gardens, stables, and even places where he kept his Arabian horses and falcons. The house formed part of the star’s public image. Valentino’s stay at Falcon Lair was brief. The site was later divided and sold in separate parcels. The transactions show that historic celebrity properties can retain value even after the original buildings are gone. In Falcon Lair’s case, the name, location, surviving features and association with Valentino and Duke continued to form part of the property’s identity.
