Remember those mock interviews in college that taught you the art of “hacking” an interview? After an HR recruiter posted on social media about Gen Z candidates looking unprofessional walking in with an iced coffee in their hands, the internet erupted into a meme fest, divided right down the middle. Gen Z job seekers and working professionals dubbed it “another millennial thing that we have to be aware of in the corporate world. They argued that they’re already being screened by AI, ATS systems and a myriad of other software, not people, to finally reach the interview round. Shouldn’t you then be well-prepared for it? Industry experts weighed in, stating that strolling in with an iced coffee looks like the interview is just another stop in your day. The judgement isn’t on your choice of beverage but what it shows the interviewer – how present and serious you may be for the interview. After the strict rules of corporate dressing, this seems like the next thing Gen Z is trying to quash in the corporate world. But Gen Z, including me, are not fully on board with this one. Personally, I can’t survive without iced coffee and often get one in the middle of my work day. But at a first impression interview where I’m bound to be scrutinised? That’s a no for me. I prepped for my job interview a whole week in advance, and the nerves do not leave room for a caffeine – I wouldn’t dare to walk in with a cup of beverage in my hand for an interview. They could be recapped for some of us. The ‘corporate baddie’ aesthetic and the sea of corporate dressing reels on Instagram make one thing clear, the corporate world works in a certain way. Even Emily Cooper (Emily in Paris) wore blazers and turtlenecks, whether we think her outfits are wearable or not is a different debate. But the essence remains in blazers, tailored pants and crisp shirts. It’s presentable and shows to a recruiter that you mean business. There is an easy way out if you must get a coffee, you politely ask the interviewer if you can bring the coffee in or leave it outside. Chances are, they will offer you water, tea or coffee anyway. But does that mean it doesn’t matter whether you walk in with a coffee, boba or milkshake? Is the argument really about what kind of drink is unprofessional or whether you are willing to follow a level of professionalism when being interviewed? You did sign up for it and the way the system works, you follow a set of norms laid out by the organisation. It’s obvious that you would dress better during screening than after a year of being at the job (and care less about what people think) – so, maybe keep the coffee for later too?
