Lucknow: Five people were arrested after private individuals allegedly demolished four legally occupied rooms in Ambedkar Nagar’s Bariyawan market using earthmovers without official permission, police said on Wednesday. The demolitions, carried out late on Sunday night, triggered a police and revenue department probe and raised questions over the unauthorised use of heavy machinery to raze structures where people had been residing.
A case was initially registered against 50-60 unidentified people. The four rooms had existed for nearly two to three decades along a road in Bariyawan market and were occupied by residents, according to the probe. Investigators found that the accused allegedly demolished the structures to create access to land situated behind them. During the investigation, police identified those allegedly involved in planning and executing the demolition. The incident also led to departmental action against police personnel. Ambedkar Nagar SP Prachi Singh suspended four policemen for alleged lapses linked to the incident. Download the TOI App.
