The Govt College for Women, DLW, Varanasi, is set to host the ‘Innovation Challenge—Preservation of Traditional Arts and Crafts, Varanasi’ from September 22 to October 15. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between the city’s rich cultural heritage and the innovative potential of the younger generation. Participants will engage in creative projects that highlight and promote traditional arts and crafts, fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among students.

Organisers said that the programme will view innovation not only as technological invention but also as a tool for social development, cultural preservation, environmental protection, local crafts and entrepreneurship. Manish Arora , Head of the Department of Applied Arts, BHU, said the core spirit of the initiative is to give tradition a future direction by connecting it with the ideas, creativity and innovation of the new generation, instead of merely preserving it in museums and archives. He said the programme, with its focus on Varanasi’s rich arts and crafts tradition, will help students connect with their cultural roots and develop new ideas.
The programme is being held in collaboration with the department of Applied Arts, faculty of Visual Arts, Banaras Hindu University; the Centre for Design Innovation, BHU; and Govt Women’s College, DLW. In the initial phase, students will take part in intensive workshops on innovation orientation, brainstorming, problem identification, creative thinking and design thinking. They will observe their campuses, nearby communities and local cultural environments to identify issues in need of innovative solutions. Students will work in groups to develop ideas and move through the process of designing, testing and improving prototypes. They will be guided to understand that transforming an idea into an innovation requires accurate problem identification, awareness of user needs, feasibility, social impact and sustainability. The programme will also include special sessions on entrepreneurship and social innovation. Students will learn how to convert their ideas into useful products, services or social solutions. A key focus will be on preserving local arts and crafts, introducing them to the next generation and exploring their relevance in contemporary contexts. Interactive sessions with experts will be held during the programme. Students will present their ideas and projects, receive feedback and make improvements based on expert suggestions. The final phase will feature an exhibition of student innovation models, projects and solutions. Each project will present the full journey of innovation, including problem identification, ideation, creative process, prototype development, testing, refinement, potential impact and future prospects. Selected projects will be evaluated by a panel of experts, and outstanding innovations will be honoured in different categories. The programme is expected to help students understand the complete innovation process, from identifying problems and developing ideas to experimenting, learning from failures and taking solutions to society.
