Started in 2022, the programme was built around a simple idea that job seekers should not have to handle the process by themselves. By 2026, the organisation said it had helped more than 50,000 people and launched thousands of Job Search Councils, where people searching for work support one another. Phyl Terry’s Never Search Alone movement has grown from a free job-search effort into a large volunteer network supporting people through unemployment and career changes. The programme remains free and relies heavily on volunteers, while Terry funds it partly through proceeds from his book.

In January 2026, Terry spoke to Georgetown University’s Pivot with Purpose community about job-search strategies, networking and ways of dealing with the strain of a prolonged search. Its website page reports that from July 2025 it was offering its free safety-net programme to government employees facing job losses across federal agencies. By 2026, Terry was still running the movement and looking for additional volunteers.

The method focuses on understanding what a person actually wants before they begin applying widely. Remote-First Coaching describes a tool called the Mnookin Two-Pager, which helps job seekers set out what they enjoy and dislike doing, their requirements for a job, career goals, strengths and weaknesses. Another part of the process is the Listening Tour. This involves speaking with people to understand the job market and identify where a person’s skills may fit. One of the key prompts used during these conversations, asks how someone would approach the job search if they were in the candidate’s position. The programme also includes a Job Mission with objectives and key results, designed to help job seekers understand what a potential role involves and whether it matches what an employer is seeking. The movement has continued expanding as different groups of workers have faced job losses. The movement later expanded its outreach to government workers. His own website reports the long-term aim is to make the free programme widely available to people experiencing job loss. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient. Take the AIQ test.

As reported by Remote-First Coaching, Terry had spent 20 years coaching around 2,000 job and promotion seekers before developing the approach. By summer 2026, the site reported more than 50,000 job seekers helped, around 5,000 volunteers and more than 5,000 Job Search Councils launched. Remote-First Coaching explains that a typical council has 4 to 6 job-seeking peers who agree to search together.

Thousands of these councils have been launched and millions of hours of volunteer time have been invested in the community, according to Never Search Alone’s website page . Phyl Terry, a career coach and founder of the movement, developed Never Search Alone from his long experience of helping people with jobs and promotions. The idea was to change the experience of looking for work from something largely individual into a shared process. Rather than expecting people to repeatedly submit applications and wait for responses, the programme encourages them to work alongside other job seekers and make use of personal connections. Terry’s own website, Phyl.org , describes Never Search Alone as a free, global, volunteer-led movement for people who have been laid off or let go. ‘Never Search Alone’ book written by Phyl Terry. The groups are intended to provide both practical and emotional support. Members can discuss their progress, help each other stay accountable and share what they are learning while searching for work. The programme also gives members a wider community beyond their own council. Its resources include tools and templates, videos, LinkedIn Live events and a Slack community where job seekers can communicate with others taking part in the movement.
