On Saturday, September 12, the singer walked onto the stage at Phoenix Mall and, with little more than his voice, poetry and a catalogue of songs steeped in heartbreak, had the audience singing along. Altaf Raja did not need special lights, visual effects or a big production to hold the attention of a packed venue in Pune. Altaf opened by speaking about his connection with Pune. He began by greeting the city and recalled that it was the hometown of his late mother and also the place where he finished a part of his schooling. It was a personal start to a concert that would repeatedly move between memories, poetry and music.
He began with the lines, “Log har mod pe ruk ruk ke sambhalte kyun hain? Itna darte hain toh phir ghar se nikalte kyun hain?” before moving into his song Awara Hawa Ka Jhoka. The opening set the tone for the evening as Altaf was not simply performing songs, but connecting them with shayari and stories, allowing one emotion to flow into another. The set moved through some of his most recognisable numbers and old favourites, including Aane Se Uske Aaye Bahaar, Parda Hai Parda, Dulhe Ka Sehra Suhana Lagta Hai and his original Jaa Bewafaa Jaa. There was also Tumhe Dillagi Bhul Jaani Padegi, followed by the familiar Sunayi Deti Hai Jiski Dhadkan, Tumhara Dil Ya Hamara Dil Hai. Altaf also found room for humour, joking that if this is the age of AI, then “romance bhi aaj kal artificial intelligence ho gaya hai. But the biggest response came when the opening notes of Tum Toh Thehre Pardesi filled the venue. The audience rose to its feet, turning the mall space into something closer to a massive singalong. Raja also played with the lyrics, giving the familiar song a contemporary twist while retaining the emotion that made it a fan favourite in the first place. What stood out through the evening was how little Altaf Raja needed beyond his performance. In an era of increasingly elaborate concert productions, his show relied largely on the simplest combination: a voice, words and emotions that the audience already knew by heart.
