Apple’s collaboration with OpenAI to integrate generative artificial intelligence (AI) into the iPhone has reportedly not met expectations. According to recently uncovered court documents, the partnership, which began in 2024, has faced significant internal challenges and has been labeled as a ‘dramatic underperformance.’ OpenAI’s legal filings indicate that they were disappointed with the lack of engagement from iPhone users following the introduction of ‘Apple Intelligence,’ which was designed to be powered by ChatGPT. This marks the first time OpenAI has publicly addressed the issues surrounding this high-profile alliance.
The filings point out that Apple set the ChatGPT integration to “off” by default. iPhone users had to navigate a multi-step sequence within system settings to turn the feature on – the process purportedly stifling widespread adoption.
