Agartala: Tension prevailed in Agartala on Thursday when candidates who qualified for Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) organised a protest, calling for immediate hiring of all 1,856 individuals who successfully passed TET-I and TET-II examinations in 2024. Candidates claimed a list of eligible aspirants was prepared after TET-I and TET-II examinations in 2024, after which they submitted applications for recruitment. They alleged document verification for approximately 1,856 aspirants had already been done; however, the recommended list had yet to be released. They demanded all 1,856 eligible individuals be appointed simultaneously, arguing there ought to be no further exclusions or new selection processes at this point.

The situation escalated when police applied force as protests grew more intense. At one stage, police employed a water cannon to disperse protesters and took several into custody. Around a hundred protesters were apprehended and subsequently transported to AD Nagar Police Lines ground. Demonstrators expressed that ongoing uncertainty regarding recruitment had created financial hardships and emotional turmoil among candidates and their families. They called upon govt to finalise recruitment without further delays and grant appointments to all qualified candidates. Protesters assembled to advocate for release of recommended candidates’ list and conclusion of recruitment for govt-designated Graduate Teacher (GT) and Under Graduate Teacher (UT) vacancies. Demonstrators contended they had approached Joint Recruitment Board of Tripura (JRBT) multiple times seeking information regarding recruitment, but no definitive decision had been communicated to them.
