Nashik: The long-pending process of appointing co-opted corporators in the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has gained momentum, with political parties beginning internal consultations and lobbying for the 10 available posts. Mayor Himgauri Aher-Adke, deputy mayor Vilas Shinde, standing committee chairperson Machhindra Sanap and group leaders of all political parties in the municipal corporation met on Thursday to review the selection process and explain candidate eligibility criteria.
Based on the party strength in the 122-member civic house, the ruling BJP is expected to secure six of the 10 co-opted corporator seats. Party loyalists, leaders who narrowly lost previous elections and people from social, educational and administrative fields are expected to be considered. Municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri handed over official application forms to party leaders and directed them to submit the names of eligible candidates for scrutiny. The selection process has triggered intense political activity across parties, with aspirants stepping up efforts to secure nominations. Khatri emphasised that only individuals possessing qualifications prescribed under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act would be eligible for appointment. Candidates are required to have notable contributions or expertise in fields such as education, social work, administration or public affairs. Seat Distribution and Nomination Process Explained
The Shiv Sena is projected to secure two seats, while the opposition alliance of Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress is anticipated to obtain the other two seats. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Independent Front are not expected to gain representation due to insufficient strength within the general body.
Khatri provided leaders with insights into the statutory provisions related to the appointments and clarified the nomination process. She stated, “Nominations would be scrutinised by the administration before the final list is published through a gazette notification.”
