AGRA: A 24-year-old man in Agra was arrested on Friday for allegedly pretending to have a sick younger sister and raising over Rs 2 lakh through crowdfunding appeals on social media. Police sources told TOI Jai Singh Rathore did not have a sister but claimed that his imaginary 12-year-old sister had glaucoma and was at risk of losing her eyesight without urgent surgery in Delhi. With his appeals, Jai Singh managed to raise Rs 2,37,592 in his bank account. An FIR was filed at the Bah police station under relevant BNS sections including 318(4) (cheating) and 340(2) (forged document or electronic record), Agrawal said.

He allegedly used forged hospital letterheads, medical prescriptions and treatment-cost estimates to convince people to donate money to his bank account, police said. He added that further legal proceedings were underway. Download the TOI App.
Allegations of Fraud at Shroff Eye Centre Prompt Investigation
The Shroff Eye Centre in Delhi NCR has become embroiled in a fraud investigation after a donor reported discrepancies regarding a patient. The hospital issued a public statement clarifying that it has no record of the alleged patient and that the letterhead used in the fraudulent documents was forged.
DCP Agra (East) Abhishek Agrawal stated that the accused, identified as Rathore, exploited the goodwill of the public to illegally solicit donations. Authorities are now looking into the matter to determine the extent of the fraudulent activities.
