Shivamogga : Deputy conservator of forests (wildlife) Prasanna Krishna Patgar visited Sakrebailu Elephant Camp Friday to inspect safety protocols ahead of its reopening to the public Saturday (Sept 26). The camp was temporarily closed following a directive from the forest minister after a woman died in an accidental incident at Dubare Elephant Camp in Kodagu district on April 18. After completing the required safety installations and compliance inspections, the department announced that the camp will resume public entry. Patgar told TOI that everything was set according to the standard operating procedure and that it could take at least a week for everyone to adopt the new guidelines. Govt instructed all elephant camps across the state to suspend public entry until strict safety rules and guidelines were implemented to ensure tourist safety. Now, in line with the forest department’s directives, precautionary measures have been put in place at Sakrebailu Elephant Camp. Separate routes have been created for visitors and elephants to prevent direct interaction or contact between tourists and the elephants. The department also strengthened physical safety measures and installed public awareness signboards across the premises. Download the TOI App.
