Kanpur: Despite incessant rains, devotees across the city immersed Lord Ganesha idols with traditional rituals and religious fervour on Friday, marking the culmination of the 10-day Ganesh festival. Idols installed in homes and pandals with a 10-day sankalp were taken to artificial immersion ponds and the Ganga ghats. The Ananta Sutra is a cotton or silk thread dyed with turmeric and vermilion, with 14 knots tied in it, according to religious tradition. The 14 knots are believed to symbolise the 14 realms.
Religious tradition also holds that the Pandavas observed the fast during the Mahabharata era to regain their lost kingdom and glory. Devotees, many of them visibly emotional, bid farewell to Lord Ganesha with the traditional chant, “Agle Baras Tu Jaldi Aa”. Observing the Anant Chaturdashi fast is believed to free a person from suffering and sins, according to religious beliefs and references in the Agni Purana. The idols were carried in vehicles amid drumbeats and devotional songs. The continuous showers disrupted the movement of devotees and processions at several places, but failed to dampen their enthusiasm. The day also marked Anant Chaturdashi , which devotees observed by worshipping Lord Vishnu and tying the Ananta Sutra on their upper arms. Many devotees observed a fast and offered kheer and other food items to the deity. Devotees tie the thread on their upper arm and pray for happiness, prosperity and protection from adversity.
