New Delhi: Thirty people were evacuated after a fire broke out at a food outlet in northwest Delhi’s Model Town Thursday afternoon. Police suspect a short circuit may have triggered the blaze.
The fire was reported around 1.58pm at a food outlet in Model Town-II. A total of 30 people were safely moved to safety, police said. 23 firefighting units, including nine water tenders and nine water bowser vehicles, were pressed into service to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures, according to fire officials. In June, a fire at a B&B in Malviya Nagar claimed 23 lives and left several others injured.
Police said the fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. A beat officer from Model Town police station, among the first responders, alerted senior officers, following which a police team rushed to the spot. On reaching the site, police found smoke billowing from the premises and immediately began evacuating people from the outlet and adjoining buildings as a precautionary measure. Fire department teams were also mobilised and initially deployed two water tenders and two water bowser vehicles. The incident was later categorised as a medium fire, prompting the deployment of additional resources. In Aug, five people were rescued by Delhi Fire Services and local residents after a fire broke out in an air-conditioner installed in a hotel kitchen in Rohini.
