Veteran Samajwadi Party leader Ram Govind Chaudhary
Lucknow: Veteran Samajwadi Party leader and former leader of the opposition in the Uttar Pradesh assembly, Ram Govind Chaudhary, died on Friday at the age of 74. Born on July 9, 1946, in Gosaipur village of Ballia district, Chaudhary completed his BA from Gorakhpur University in 1974 and later obtained an LLB degree from Lucknow University in 1982. Between 1977 and 1992, he represented Chilkahar constituency in Ballia. After delimitation, he shifted to Bansdih constituency, which he represented multiple times from 2002 onwards on a Samajwadi Party ticket. In Mulayam Singh Yadav’s 1990-91 government, he served as minister for horticulture and food processing. Later, he handled child development, nutrition and basic education in the Mulayam government between 2003 and 2007 and continued in the same role during the Akhilesh Yadav government from 2012 to 2017.

He had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments at SGPGI, Lucknow. His death marks the end of a political career that spanned nearly five decades and was closely intertwined with the evolution of socialist politics in Uttar Pradesh. News of his demise triggered an outpouring of grief among party workers and leaders across the state, particularly in his home district of Ballia. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav condoled Chaudhary’s death, describing it as a major loss for the party and the socialist movement. In a post on X, he prayed for peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear the loss. A grassroots politician with a reputation for simplicity and accessibility, Chaudhary emerged from eastern Uttar Pradesh’s socialist movement and went on to become one of the most enduring faces of the Samajwadi Party. Over the course of his career, he worked alongside socialist icon Jayaprakash Narayan and former prime minister Chandra Shekhar before becoming a trusted associate of SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav . His entry into politics coincided with the rise of the JP movement, which shaped a generation of leaders in north India. Chaudhary was elected to the Uttar Pradesh assembly eight times, a testament to his enduring appeal among voters. Within the party, he was regarded as part of the old socialist guard that connected the SP to the JP and Lohia traditions. Known for his firm command over legislative procedures and sharp interventions in the assembly, Chaudhary served as leader of opposition in the Uttar Pradesh assembly from 2017 to 2022, a period when the SP was rebuilding itself after its defeat in the 2017 elections.
