LUCKNOW: Heavy rain and storms have claimed 15 lives, injured five people and killed four animals across Uttar Pradesh over the past 48 hours. The downpour also damaged 117 houses, the relief commissioner’s office said on Saturday. Relief Commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod said 63 districts recorded above-normal rainfall. The state received 19 times its normal rainfall in the 24 hours. Farrukhabad recorded 200 times its usual rainfall, followed by Kanpur Nagar at 160 times. Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat and Hardoi each received 130 times their normal rainfall. The deaths were reported in 11 districts. Banda reported the highest number of damaged houses, at 32, followed by Jalaun with 21 and Hardoi with 14. The India Meteorological Department has forecast that the weather may improve after 36 hours. People can report emergencies and seek help by calling the relief helpline 1070.
Lakhimpur Kheri recorded four deaths and Ayodhya two, while Amethi, Bahraich, Banda, Barabanki, Basti, Fatehpur, Hamirpur, Hardoi and Kanpur Nagar reported one each. Rescue teams have been told to remain active and keep watch over affected areas. Authorities have also been told to share weather warnings and safety advice with residents. Yashod said district magistrates had been asked to remain alert, keep flood response teams ready and monitor conditions in the field. Adding further relief commissioner Yashod said, “We urge residents to leave home only when necessary, stay in safe places and follow official advisories.
In Bahraich, a person died after a wall collapsed. One person was killed in Basti during stormy conditions. Seven houses each were damaged in Auraiya and Pilibhit, and five each in Bahraich and Sultanpur. Yashod directed district magistrates to meet affected families and ensure prompt assistance. Officials have been asked to arrange treatment for the injured, assess damage and distribute eligible relief. They must also survey crop losses and provide assistance to affected farmers under the applicable rules. Fire services, the Provincial Armed Constabulary, Civil Defence personnel, Home Guards and disaster-response volunteers are to be deployed as needed. Officials, including lekhpals and village development officers, have been asked to check for waterlogging around kutcha houses and arrange drainage.
