Nashik : A 54-year-old man with mild paralysis — affecting his neck and right shoulder — allegedly attacked fellow inmates with his metal walking stick at an old age home in Ahilyanagar early on Saturday, killing two and injuring six.
Others fled the home and ran nearly 300 metres to a petrol pump, where people helped them alert police. “At 54, Ghule is the youngest inmate at the old age home. Though he claims he was angry over the taunts he faced from others, attacking people in their sleep at 6.15am appears absurd,” assistant inspector Hemant Thorat, of the MIDC police station, said.
Police said there was no one at home who could provide him full-time care. The screams woke the other inmates. Some ran for cover. MIDC police reached the old age home within seven minutes of receiving the call and took Ghule into custody. All the others are in their 60s and 70s. Ghule, an unmarried resident of Gavhan Kumbhari in Kopargaon, had suffered a paralytic attack before being admitted to the facility by his nephew about a year ago.
Police said Ghule had once left the facility earlier and spent three days on the streets before being traced and brought back. Police are now looking closely at his interactions with other inmates and his conduct at the home. Sudarshan, additional SP Vaibhav Kalburme, Ahilyanagar Rural deputy SP Shirish Wamne and other senior officers visited the old age home after the incident.
